Suggestions for School Library Media Teacher Advocacy

The foundation for advocacy is built each day that the library media center is open. This foundation consists of the program efforts made by the professional library media teacher to raise achievement in four critical areas:

  • Building capable and avid readers
  • Collaborating with teachers to build exciting learning experiences
  • Teaching information literacy as a part of collaborative learning experiences
  • Enhancing learning through technology

As these activities become a common occurence of the daily program, there is a constant stream of good news to share with the world.

Dr. Ken Haycock in a recent speech to the Texas Library Association, outlined five major steps in an advocacy program based on the research and best practice of the library media program (see at http://www.kenhaycock.com/index.html under Training and Development and then under school library advocacy. These steps are:

  • Have a clear and measurable objective for your advocacy.
  • Target groups who need to know what you are doing.
  • Build your strategies for communicating with those groups (What? When? Where? Who? How?)
  • Build your communication tools (presentations, brochures, letters, etc.); Never start with these tools, always start with #1 above.
  • Evaluate your advocacy efforts regularly.
